December 18, 2017 – Mad River Trail

Left Manson about 11:00.  Drove to Entiat River Road.  10 miles up to turn at Ardenvoir on Mad River Road.  About 5 miles to Pine Flats Campground where the trailhead is located.  Temperature about 35 degrees.  Mostly cloudy.  Light breeze.

Started out from Highlander parked on closed road to campground.  Wearing light day packs and mountaineering boots.  Trail gently goes up the side of the small river.  Surprised at many rock outcroppings above the river that look climbable.  Some breezy places but consistently good trail.  Mostly granite sand with some roots and rocks.  Only saw a few birds on the trip; a raven and a dipper.

Trail goes in and out of narrow canyons alternating with open lightly forested slopes.  Some burned areas.  Turned around at 1:30.  Had a couple bars and an orange with water.  Returned the same way.  Toes a bit sore from boots but no blisters.

Returned to the car at 3:00 as the sky was becoming more cloudy.

Stopped at Lake Chelan Winery for a glass of wine.  Elaine – Merlot.  Mike – Stormy Mountain Red (blend).

Picked up things for pasta dinner back at our place.
