The Scottish Moors

Sunday, August 3

Suitcases packed and in the baggage room by 8am. Wonderful breakfast served as ordered. Not a buffet breakfast today. Elaine had smoked salmon scrambled eggs and I had American style pancakes. Both fabulously good. On the trail across the River Orchy at 8:50. Over a ridge and down to the Abhainn Shira (a river). Then we steadily climbed up to a miles-wide moor taking us toward River Bá and Kingshouse.

We stopped by the River Bá for our packed lunch of chicken salad and tuna sandwiches, but only ate part of them along with the crisps, caramel log, and apple.

After our 12 mile day we arrived at Kingshouse, a very large lodge situated 10 miles from Glencoe and near the Glencoe Mountain Lodge and Ski Area. Yep, they actually do have a ski area with lifts here in Scotland.

Checked in a bit early and went down to the Climber’s Bar for beers and whisky again. Discriminating between whiskies takes some time, and we’ll keep working at it.

Dinner in the Climber’s Bar looking out at the nearby mountains and high mountain meadowland with the sun heading down was really pleasant. Mushroom risotto for Elaine and Rump Roast for me. Both very nicely prepared and yummy.

We’ve been watching the weather and Storm Floris is headed this way and will arrive here sometime around 10am tomorrow. Our hiking route tomorrow takes us up to the Devil’s Staircase (1800’) and over to Kinlochleven. The storm is forecasted to produce really heavy winds and rain, and gusts to possibly 90mph. We are making plans to take busses around this section thinking being exposed to this kind of weather is not the safest choice
